National Botanical Gardens and Cecil Rhodes monument, Dec. 20th

Cecil Rhodes did a lot of good in South Africa - his foundation funds the Rhodes Scholarships in England. He was born in England, educated at Oxford - hence the scholarships but his treatment of minorities have made him less admirable now. He had poor health and was sent to South Africa at the age of 17 to recover. With funding he bought up diamond minds and became very wealthy.  He never married and died in Cape Town, only 48 years old.  Students voted to remove his statue from the University of Cape Town.

Beautiful flowers at the National Botanical Gardens,  Bro. Bowrie worked as a scientist there for 28 years - he knows so much!
One of many varieties of Protea, the national flower of South Africa.
These signs are on trees that are over 100 years old!

Interesting that the plant live from each continent has both common and different species.
This tree is over 100 years old - still growing.

White plant, stems, leaves and flowers!
There was a Bonsai exhibit we visited. Some plants were over 80 years old - so interesting.
