South African Church History and Elder Thomas B. Smith

This is the Church History Department in the Area Office. Elder and Sister Irving were serving here when we came, they finished their mission and Elder and Sister Candland came for six months. They just finished and they were replaced by a Church employee who lives near the MTC and Mission complex across town. He will only come in to this office once in a while.
The shelves of books about Church History in South Africa. Very interesting to look through. On April 18, 1853, three elders landed in Cape Town  from Salt Lake City - Elders Walker, Haven and Smith! They had been in England trying to get to South Africa - for seven months! It was exciting to find a relative was Mission President here.  Nickolas Groesbeck Smith - my Father's uncle, was Mission President from September 1913 to March 1921 - 8 years!  My Grandpa Glenn Groesbeck Smith was his half brother.
Shovels used in Temple groundbreaking - Johannesburg, Accra Ghana, Durban and Cape Town.
The doors to the right are the way into our Self Reliance Department - it is in the ground level and pretty quiet most of the time.  Several of the staff still work from home a couple of days a week.

Harold's older brother, Thomas Burton Smith, served his mission in South Africa - 1960-1963.  We looked up those years - his mission President was Alldredge.  Oh funny - this directory of missionaries, has Tom's name and that he is from Corvallis, Oregon - but it is NOT his picture!  He's much better looking than who ever this is!!!  Glad we can all repent of our mistakes!
Tom's appointment to Supervising Elder, West Rand.  It's great to know the places he knew 40+ years ago,
Nice to read about Tom and how good he was as a missionary.  He was the Assistant to the President and traveled the whole mission.  He learned to brush his teeth without water!!
Tom's little brother Elder Harold with the book in the Church History Office - Africa South Area.
The cover of the Book that talked about Tom's mission.  Someone put a great deal of effort into compiling these history books - they are wonderful!
