Senior Dinner and Heritage Day

 

September 24th is a National Holiday in South Africa - Heritage Day.  There are eleven official languages and many different cultures.  This pubic holiday is to recognize and celebrate all of them! The holiday was on Saturday this year and many of the citizens wore their traditional costumes to churc on Sunday, September 25.  Here are 6 of the Primary girls in costumes.

Older sister in the ward - I can't remember her name or spell it or pronounce it but she wanted me to take her picture!  Love the humble, faithful saints here. 
More wonderful sisters - they are wonderful and easy to love and serve, as our Savior would have us do.

Since our monthly Senior Dinner was on Heritage Day - I wore a scarf around my head and my head piece as a shawl - no one else did!!  
They have been remodeling in our part of the building and the automatic doors have been turned off - and are usually left open. Saturday evening as we arrived for the Senior dinner we found the campus cat in our office!  Silly kitty!  
September 24th, yummy dinner and fun games. We had soup and rolls, salads and dessert. I made Russian Borscht soup, Sister Watson, made Finnish Salmon soup. They served as mission presidents in Finland.  There was also chicken corn chowder and beef stew - delicious all!

Senior Couples Give Thanks!

On Saturday, November 27th, all the senior couples got together for a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner.  So much delicious food and great company!  We made stuffing, deviled eggs and pumpkin cheesecake for our contributions.  Room full of such great senior missionaries!!   Darling Lilly, sleeping on Thanksgiving Day - Sam wanted us to see her cute dress!!   The Mission sewing machine - passed around from senior sister to senior sister - I used it for a week and then it wouldn't work!  We are taking it to a shop for repairs and Elder Smith bought me a new one - Singer basic - Merry Christmas to me! Fun African fabric I found at a local shop - will make great bowl cozies!  We found these cows on the side of the road near our Chapel in Kwa Thema!!  There were these pretty yellow Lily's also on our drive to church.

Area Office

  Sunday October 31, Elder and Sister Elggren drove us to our assigned ward - the Kwa Thelma 2nd ward.  It was Stake Conference and both wards met together - great talks!  Wonderful to meet the people we will be serving on Sundays.  It is about a 40 minute drive from the city - delightful children. The Temple is right next to the Area Offices - all are in a park like setting - an old estate that the Church purchased. View from behind the temple. Little lizard on the post of the steps into the office!   Part of the Office buildings - underground parking door in the middle of the picture. The door to our department. Our Self Reliance Office

  Brother Philip showing Elder Smith some of the places we have Pathway students.  He has traveled extensively all over the world. He is really a wonderful manager - his office is right next to ours.  This is a poster we have been working on - the senior couples will take it to their individual chapels this weekend and ask the Bishop/Branch President if they can post it on the bulletin board...hopefully! Elder Smith hard at work! Copy machine in the background - Display behind it...for projects. Sister Smith hardly working!!   Both of our desks - it is nice to be working on this mission together.
