Nizamiye Mosque Visit
On Saturday, November 6th, Elder and Sister Humphreys invited us to go sight seeing with them. This is the Nizamiye Mosque, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Besides the Mosque there is a large school, Health Clinic and cemetery.
The outer court - we didn't know if we could come in so we asked a guard and he told us yes - and that he would get us a guide to show us around.
The washing station - before prayers five times a day, they wash their feet, hands and head. There are water spickets in each square of the fountain thing. - marble stools to sit on. There was also a men's washing room and a women's inside the building.
We learned about the Ottoman Empire - covered most of the known world at the time! This is a room that the Ottoman's would use for business and entertainment.
Our two guides at the left, the older one in the light shirt, the younger one in burgundy. Elder Smith, Sister Humphreys and Elder Humphreys taking a picture - in his BYU shirt and hat!
Ottoman famous warriors - middle picture of the last 36 Sultans of the empire.
Women's washing room inside the mosque. We took our shoes off to go inside.
Huge domed room - prayer rug on the floor...pretty tile all imported from Turkey. Lots of stained glass windows - used a lot of tulip motifs - a tulip stands and blooms alone - like the One God - Allah.
Closer look at the ceiling and windows.
The stand where the Iman goes to call people to prayer - we remembered the Rameumptom stand from Alma 31 in the Book of Mormon.
Model of another Mosque in Turkey - pictures of many others in their Gallery.
Sister Humpherys outside the Mosque. The two guides took us the the small Bazar and bought us ice cream - they sat and talked to us about their Islam religion and ours!
There were children playing soccer games next to the mosque - so fun to see.
